Lawmaker Ali Mottahari declared that a number of parliament members who had already signed a petition for questioning President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad have withdrawn their signature, but since more lawmakers have endorsed the act for it will proceed.

Speaking to Khabar Online, the member of culture commission of Iranian Majlis (Parliament) responded to Mohammad Hossein Farhangi, a member of Majlis presiding board and a backer of Ahmadinejad who had earlier said Mottahari will not pursue the plan to sommon Ahmadinejad to Majlis for answering the questions of lawmakers.

"It's not true. The Majlis presiding board simply requested us to halt the process temporarily to provide an appropriate mechanism for implementing the question plan. It's due to the multiplicity of the plan and the way of addressing them to various Majlis commissions. We accepted the request and are currently waiting to see what measure the presiding board will introduce," Mottahari said.

Earlier Mottahari, who is a prominent member of the Principalist faction of Iran's Majlis and a key critic of Ahmadinejad in recent years said that the petition is provided for questioning the actions taken by Ahmadinejad has been signed by 100 lawmakers.

Based on the Islamic Republic of Iran's Constitution, the measure to question the president should be signed by at least one fourth of the Majlis members (73 out of 290) to be proceeded.

On the withdrawal of some lawmakers from plan for questioning the president, he explained: "Due to the efforts made by Mr. Farhangi, a number of MPs who thought he reflects the view of the presiding board, removed their signatures from the petition. But the new measure can be foiled since some of them told me about their misconception."

"Generally it won't have an impact on the entire process because more lawmakers have said they want to join the plan and sign the document. However those who have withdrawn their signature have revealed their true character to those who voted for them and Iranian people in general. Some lawmakers who are signatories to the petition believe that the names of those who removed their names should be published but at the moment I disagree with that," the lawmaker added.

Mottahari who is the representative of Tehran in the Majlis said at the time of Ahmadinejad's absence from cabinet meetings and his office [in a clear protest to the reinstatement of his Minister of Intelligence Heydar Moslehi by the leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Khamenei], only about 10 lawmakers signed the petition which just questioned the president's disobedience from an issue decreed by the leader: "That question is still being raised and it shows that many lawmakers had not signed the petition on those days."

"So it is simply a pretext to encourage the lawmakers to withdraw from the motion. However we will determinedly follow the plan and it's better for Mr. Fathangi to focus on his duties in the presiding board including the enforcement of Majlis procedural guidelines rather than being involved in such affairs."

Even in earlier months, several lawmakers had criticized the administration for violating 50 articles of the Constitution. The complaints led to calls for asking Ahmadinejad questions on the reasons behind the delay in introducing the Minister of Sports and Youth for the newly established ministry; delay in allocating funds to the Metro of Tehran as well as measures adopted by the government in putting the ratified cultural plans into practice.

Last week Musalreza Servati, a member of the Principalists fraction in the Majlis (Parliament) said President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has reportedly expressed his readiness to answer the questions raised possibly by lawmakers about his performance, but he didn't refer to the source of the report.

Based on the Article 88 of the Islamic Republic of Iran's Constitution, the president must attend the floor of Majlis in a month after being summoned. He won't be subject to this law if only lawmakers agree to withdraw the motion.
