His request was made on the occasion of the 31st anniversary of the Islamic revolution victory on February 11, 1979.
According to Khabar Online correspondent, Kavakebian a MP from Semnan (a city located in some 240 km east of Tehran) referred to article 44 of the Islamic Republic Constitution and stated: "In recent years Judiciary Chief proposed for a relent in the punishment or the pardon of political convicts, a request which has been frequently accepted by the supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
The member of national security and foreign policy commission of the Parliament asked for the immediate investigation on the cases of the post-vote detainees. He also hoped that those whose cases are in the rehearing process will be included in the list of convicts eligible to be granted amnesty by the Leader on the occasion of February 11.
However Kavakebian underlined that by this he doesn't mean the rioters or those intended to subvert the establishment, but simply the members of political parties, university instructors or journalists who are put in jail after the presidential election conducted on June 12.
Replacing Ayatollah Hashemi Shahroudi, the new Judiciary Chief Sadeq Larijani was appointed by Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in September to serve for the next five years.
