Iranian musician Shahrdad Rohani who is currently the guest conductor of Tehran Symphony Orchestra maintained that the ensemble must be equipped well to perform with a higher quality.

"The officials must improve, define and stabilize the salaries and wages for musicians, mend or replace the instruments and some amendments must also be made to the group of players," he told Khabar Online.

Rohani is to be replaced by a new guest conductor in forthcoming days. Compared to the other Iranian high-brow ensembles including Iranian National Orchestra and chamber orchestras like Parsian, Tehran Symphony Orchestra is regarded as one of the few active Iranian orchestras. Rohani has himself expressed willingness to be the permanent conductor of Tehran Symphony Orchestra, but has set a number of conditions.

He is basically the music director and conductor of the COTA symphony orchestra in Los Angeles. He has appeared as a guest conductor with a number of prestigious orchestras including London's Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Minnesota Orchestra, Colorado Symphony Orchestra, San Diego Symphony, Zagreb Philharmonic, the American Youth Philharmonic Orchestras and so forth.

Having studied at the Academy and Conservatories of Music in Vienna, Austria, Shahrdad Rohani has received several important scholarships and awards both in Europe and United States. These include the A.K.M Scholarship, Vienna, Austria, and the ASCAP Scholarship, Los Angeles, California.

He is probably most known for arranging and conducting the Yanni Live at the Acropolis concert, an open-air concert with the London Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra in the Parthenon, Athens, Greece.

Rohani believes sending Tehran Orchestra to perform outside the country would be helpful if only the ground is prepared for boosting the quality of the performances: "A symphony orchestra represents the culture and the music of a country. We must improve the work of players, otherwise we would tour in foreign countries to show simply that we have a symphony orchestra."

For two performances with Tehran Symphony Orchestra the conductor mostly selected works of the Western classical music, but he says as well as these works which are routinely experienced, the ensemble can perform the classical works of Iranian music written by the local composers.

"I myself didn't have enough time to perform the original and classic works of Iranian music with the Orchestra. I had to focus on the pieces belonging to various periods of the Western classical music to make the musicians more acquainted with these works and enable them to hold better performances. But Iranian music should also be included in their repertoire. Actually a long-term program must be compiled for Tehran Symphony Orchestra to contain the works of Iranian composers as well."
