Boroujerdi who heads the national security and foreign policy commission of Iranian Parliament (Majlis) said on Thursday: "The remarks of Russian President about Iran's nuclear activities are not true. The peaceful nuclear program of the Islamic Republic is based on keeping doors open to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)."
"We follow our activities within the framework of Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). Based on our safeguard agreement, the IAEA inspectors are constantly allowed to visit our nuclear centers. Also surveillance cameras installed at the centers are always monitoring our work," he stated.
The top MP went on to say: "As a world power, Russia should not be deceived by the wrong information provided by American and British intelligence organizations."
According to Reuters, Medvedev said on Monday that it was obvious Iran was gaining the ability to develop a nuclear bomb, the strongest signal yet that the Kremlin is moving closer to the West's position on Iran's nuclear program.
Medvedev however said: "At the moment, patience is demanded and the speediest resumption of productive dialogue with Tehran. If diplomats let this chance go, then this will become a collective failure for the entire international community."
His comments were welcomed in Washington as a sign of international unity behind a harder line toward Tehran. The administration of U.S. President Barack Obama has made a priority of seeking Moscow's support for its tougher line toward Tehran, and appears to have had increasing success in recent months.
Russia has been Iran's main international nuclear partner and is building Iran's first nuclear power plant near the southern port city of Bushehr, which is set to begin operations later this year.
Russia backed a U.N. Security Council resolution on June 9 to impose new sanctions on Iran and Russian officials have expressed frustration at what they describe as Iran's failure to disclose full details of its nuclear program.
Iran in its own turn has criticized the Kremlin for joining the US-led sanctions campaign after Moscow reached a deal with Washington, expressing disappointment in its longtime trade partner.
