A member of the Iranian parliament downplayed German Chancellor's recent threats of sanction against Iran's energy supplies, viewing the remarks by Angela Merkel as part of West's psychological warfare against Tehran.

"We do not need Europe, but they need the Persian Gulf oil and their companies are moving on the basis of the plans they have already worked out in this regard," member of the Iranian parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Mohammad Karami Raad told FNA on Saturday.

The comments by Karami Raad came a day after Merkel's remarks on potential energy sanctions against Iran if Iran-West nuclear talks yield no progress.

She told the daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung on Friday that "If there is no progress, we would have to react with further sanctions".

Noting that the six world powers (Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia and the United States) would gather in September to talk about Iran, Merkel added, "I don't want to preempt the talks but economic sanctions dealing with the energy sector are on the table but we must wait to see what comes of the talks. We must also speak about them (possible sanctions) with our partners Russia and China."

However, the Iranian lawmaker downplayed such threats, and noted, "Westerners know very well that we have had no diversion towards military goals in our peaceful nuclear activities and these threats are more part of a psychological operation to materialize their goal. I believe that most of them are empty threats."

He underlined that the remarks by the German chancellor would merely stir tension in the world oil market.

He mentioned that the Iranian parliament would assess Merkel's remarks and decide over the future of Tehran-Berlin ties in an upcoming meeting.
