The secretary general of the Iran's Combatant Clergy Association, Ayatollah Mohammad Reza Mahdavi Kani said yesterday some act against the unity of Iranian nation.

On the sidelines of the opening ceremony of Islamic Unity Conference in Tehran, he responded to Khabar Online correspondent's question on what steps did he take to end the conflicts resulted from the disputed Iran's June 12 presidential election.

"I was not supposed to take steps to ease the tensions. Even the press wrote that I am to mediate the dispute," he said.

"Of course I'm concerned for unity, but I prefer not to act as mediator," Ayatollah Kani added.

The former Interim Prime Minister of Iran who backs President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad asserted: "Some figures oppose the reconciliation...."

Asked whom are you referring to? He answered: "You know them, so why do you ask? Don't ask political questions!"

Ayatollah Kani declared: "For its independent policies, the Islamic Republic of Iran has been under political and cultural attacks. When the global arrogance realized that our revolution and culture is influencing the world, began to oppose it and their opposition is the best reason proving that this revolution has influenced the world."

Evaluating the status of the Islamic Republic, the secretary general of the Iran's Combatant Clergy Association said: "We have the highest status in the world. Each country which can introduce a new idea in cultural and intellectual terms will be eventually given prominence in the world.

Mahdavi Kani is the founder and current head of Imam Sadegh University in Tehran, a religious university specializing in humanities.
