Iran's Minister of Roads and Transportation, Hamid Behbahani said yesterday that all officials and experts are agreed on the dismissal of Reza Nakhjavani, the head of Iran Civil Aviation Organization (CAO). He also claimed that no outside pressure is put on the ministry to remove him.

According to Khabar Online correspondent, on the sidelines of the ceremony held for the launching of Persian Gulf freeway project, Behbahani responded to the journalists questions on the possible removal of Nakhjavani.

"No measures have been taken till now, but I will sign his marching orders soon," the Roads Minister said.

Numerous deadly air crashes have been occurred in Iran during recent years. Last July, a Tupolev passenger plane carrying 168 people headed to Armenian capital Yerevan crashed shortly after takeoff from Tehran's Imam Khomeini airport. All those aboard were killed at the accident.

After the crash Nakhjavani publicly stated that he blames the calamity on pilot error.

On the possible replacements for the current CAO head, Behbahani told the journalists: "You can make your own proposal if you have an appropriate substitute in your mind."

When some offered Captain Hossein Khanlari, former head of CAO, the Roads Minister said: "I must mull over further to make a decision on this candidate."

"Surely I will fully consider the cases of all possible candidates before choosing one," he added.

In the recent week, rumors were spread over the plausible candidates to replace Nakhjavani, the most promising include Mohammad Ali Ilkhani, former head of Iran Civil Aviation Organization, Khanlari and Abdolrahimi, one of the deputies of Iran's Airports Company.

Iranian officials often blame U.S. sanctions that prevent it from refurbishing the American fleet bought before the 1979 Islamic revolution and also make it hard to get spare parts or planes from Europe.

Under the sanctions imposed by the United States and difficulty in getting spare parts or planes both from that country and Europe, Iran has come to rely on Russian aircraft particularly Tupolev passenger planes which have caused many accidents in the latest years.
