Iran's Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani is to attend the 3rd Conference of Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) which will be held from July 19 to 21 in Geneva, Switzerland.

Titled "Parliaments in the Crisis Hit World" the conference will be attended by the parliament speakers of the member states and parliamentary delegations. Headed by Larijani, Iranian parliamentary delegation is to actively take part at the event, Khabar Online correspondent reported.

The top Iranian legislator will deliver a lecture to elaborate on Islamic Republic's positions on the import regional and international issues particularly those related to the Islamic world. He is also to meet the speakers of the member parliaments on the sidelines of the summit.

Established in 1889, the Union is the focal point for world-wide parliamentary dialogue and works for peace and cooperation among peoples and for the firm establishment of representative democracy. To that end it fosters contacts, coordination, and the exchange of experience among parliaments and parliamentarians of all countries.

Last March, in a letter addressed to IPU's incumbent president, Theo-Ben Gurirab who is the Parliament Speaker of Namibia, Larijani warned that Israeli regime is to make the holy city of Bayt al-Muqaddas (Jerusalem) regarded holy by Jews, Christians and Muslims more Jewish. In a new provocative move, Zionists have begun to construct a Jewish temple in Islamic endowed lands and through massive propagation are adding to their illegal actions.

Since Palestine has always been a sensitive key issue in the Islamic Republic's foreign policy, one can predict that in IPU conference Larijani would draw again on the issue of Palestinians and crimes committed in Gaza. He had earlier called for holding an emergency meeting of Islamic Inter-Parliamentary Union (IIPU) to discuss the issue.

The President of the IPU has also expressed his deep concern for Israel's military attack in international waters on a humanitarian flotilla headed to the Gaza Strip and the situation in Gaza requesting the regular flow of goods, including humanitarian assistance into the territory.

As the former secretary of Iran's Supreme Council of National Security, Larijani led Iran's nuclear program and participated at international negotiations on the issue. In his earlier lecturers in IPU conferences the parliament speaker has defended Iranian peaceful nuclear activities.

The IPU has 143 members and its conferences are held every five years. The union supports the efforts of the United Nations whose objectives it shares and works in close cooperation with it. IPU also cooperates with regional inter-parliamentary organizations, as well as with international inter-governmental and non-governmental organizations which are motivated by the same ideals. The entity's headquarters is located in Geneva and it is financed primarily by its members out of public funds.
