The rumors began to spread on Thursday when some media claimed that Iran has seized an Iraqi oil field.

Located in a region called Fakkah, which Iran believes is a part of its territory, some reports underlined that Iranian military forces have taken hold of the region.

Various statements made by Iraqi officials stressed: "The oilfield belongs to Iraq. Iranian military forces should withdraw and let to resolve the issue through diplomatic talks."

In the meantime Iranian officials have stated that it's not clear that whether the oil well belongs to Iraq or not, but in the final analysis they emphasize that Iranian forces have not seized that.

But in the second round of its oil bids, Iraq has called for a bid on Fakkah oil field located about 200 miles (about 320 kilometers) southeast of Baghdad which signals that Iraqis also believe the field belongs to them.

Iraq says the disputed oil well is placed 300 m behind the borderline with Iran, however and Iranian official in Ministry of Oil told Khabar Online that no borderline has been defined on the region.

Speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized by Iran's supreme Council of National Security to discuss the issue with the media, the official asserted: "Simply the Ministry of Foreign Affairs can comment on the issue, but it is obvious that the oil field is either belongs to Iran or both countries are allowed to drill the well.

Anyway Iraq has a claim on the field which is stated as a reason for offering it in the bidding.

Recently during the last visit of an Iraqi board of officials to Iran, discussion on the issue between the officials of both countries turned to a dispute, so based on their negotiations both parties agree to resolve the problem through diplomatic methods to sooth the tension.

The Iranian official of Oil Ministry pointed out: "Until now Iran has no program to develop the oil field and all rumors on the presence of Iranian military forces in the region are absolutely false

Earlier a spokesman for Iran's Foreign Ministry had accused foreign media of trying to disrupt good relations between Tehran and Baghdad.
