Irish musician Gleeson was recently appointed to lead the Tehran Symphony Orchestra (TSO) as a guest conductor, under whose baton they will be giving concerts on December 3 and 4 at Tehran’s Vahdat Hall.
The orchestra’s musical instruments are not comparable to those in Europe and newer, more modern ones need to be obtained, he said in a session held on Tuesday.
The major problem is in making use of wind instruments and its techniques, he said, adding that he has become familiar with kamancheh and its capabilities in an orchestra for the first time.
The musicians have strong motivations to learn and play, while this is not the case in European countries where they prefer not to play with an orchestra, he said.
The conductor believes that some of the musicians in the orchestra need more courses for their education and need to be retrained for orchestral performances.
Director of the Iranian Music Association Babak Rezaii, also present at the session, said that the orchestra is due to perform compositions by Ardeshir Kamkar and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No.6 in two separate sections in the upcoming concert in Tehran.
“Foreign guest conductors have achieved good results for us. Also, we are trying to establish an orchestra for wind instruments,” Rezaii added.
Rezaii also said that deputy culture minister for artistic affairs proposed forming a youth orchestra with the support of Culture Ministry to make better use of young talent in the future.
