"We must be thankful if Amano preserves the same level which El-Baradei kept regarding Iran and its nuclear dossier," Ayatollahi said.

TEHRAN (ISNA)-Iran's former representative at the IAEA said Saturday that the new Director General of the agency will focus on technical issues regarding topics on his agenda adding he is not optimistic about Yukiya Amano's independence.

Japan has been following the US policies and will continue this trend, Mohammad Sadeq Ayatollahi told ISNA in an interview and added, he is not optimistic that Amano could have an independent stance in his decisions as the IAEA chief.

Many in Iran criticized the current chief, Mohammad El-Baradei, for his equivocal judgments on Iran's issue and "I don't think that Amano would make better stances than El-Baradei towards Iran," he said.

If he wants to stand stronger than El-Baradei did in Iran's case, he must have a firm support from Japan's government, he noted, "the support, if it happens, would be a miracle and would indicate that Japan wants to be opposing against the US and other atomic countries and wants to use Iran's peaceful nuclear industry as a lever of force."

If the Japanese diplomat has anything to say in regard with support for developing countries peaceful nuclear technology, it shows his government's support for the issue, he noted.

Japanese have usually been in the West front at the Board of Governors and "we can't have special expectations regarding the agency's reversal of approach towards Iran," he stated.

Amano will move slowly and will stress on technical work, he said.

"We must be thankful if Amano preserves the same level which El-Baradei kept regarding Iran and its nuclear dossier," Ayatollahi said.
