TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman underlined the peaceful nature of the country's nuclear program, insisting that Tehran has no plan to build nuclear arms.
"It is our inalienable right to have peaceful nuclear activities within the framework of the International Atomic Energy Organization (IAEA) regulations and the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT)," Qashqavi told reporters during a weekly press conference here on Monday, reminding that Iran is a signatory to the NPT.
"Our defense doctrine has no room for nuclear weapons," he said, speaking in a weekly press conference here in Tehran on Monday.
"We are and we have always been a pioneer in (nuclear) disarmament in the world and in the Middle East," Qashqavi reiterated.
His remarks came days after US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton suggested that Washington might extend a defense umbrella over the Middle East in response to what she alleged as potential Iranian threats.
Washington and its Western allies accuse Iran of trying to develop nuclear weapons under the cover of a civilian nuclear program, while they have never presented any corroborative evidence to substantiate their allegations. Iran denies the charges and insists that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only.
Elsewhere, Qashqavi responded to a question on Iran's package of proposals to the West, and mentioned that Tehran is currently "preparing the package" which, he said, addresses outstanding issues of the world.
"The package should be comprehensive, updated and operational, and (preparing) it requires some time," he continued.
