Iranian Ambassador to Hanoi Seyed Javad Qavam Shahidi expressed hope that Iran-Vietnam trade exchanges would undergo more growth, given the two sides' increased familiarity with each other's economic sectors.

Speaking to FNA, Shahidi said that the volume of trade between the two countries stood at $156 million in 2008, and added, "The figure was $70 million in 2006 and $108 million in 2007."

He also announced that Vietnam for the first time invested in Iran's energy and oil projects and in the exploration of oil in Danan on the border line between Iran's Ilam (southwest) and Khouzestan (south) provinces.

Shahidi then referred to the endorsement of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Hanoi on a railway project, according to which Iran will reconstruct locomotives and a part of Vietnam's railway system.

He pointed to the export of 100 to 200 wagons from Iran to Vietnam, and said, "There have been several rounds of talks in this regard. The two sides have exchanged technical groups and the project is nearing executive phases."
