The key figure culpable for the crimes committed there is Saeed Mortazavi, former Tehran Prosecutor General and incumbent head of the office for campaign against smuggling.
According to Khabar Online correspondent, the signatories whose names are not clear have requested the judges of Judiciary Branch to observe meticulously the evidences given through the impartial report of the Parliament members. By doing so, Judiciary Branch will be saved from accusations of trampling the rights of the cruelty victims in public opinion.
The MPs regarded the prisoners' mistreatment at Kahrizak notorious detention center, which is located in the south of Tehran, as one of the bitter incidents occurred during the post-election crisis. They say it happened after some politicians under illusion breached the law. The event prompted the enemies to rebuke the Islamic Republic. Also through neglecting the rights of several Iranian citizens, these officials damaged the reputation of the establishment.
The letter refers to the unlawful measures taken in Kahrizak, it reads: "We, the undersigned, the representatives of people in Islamic Parliament request the respected Judiciary Chief that in his efforts to rectify the wrong, foil the plots set for the prosecution of investigators on the cases of those accused in Kahrizak tragedy. On the other hand, former Tehran Prosecutor General, the main culprit based on the official report of the Majlis should not remain immune from impartial prosecution.
The MPs have also asked Ahmadinejad to remove an official accused of such major offenses from heading a key organization as the office for campaign against smuggling until the final verdict is issued on him. This way the president will show the oppressed and public opinion that he respects the Majlis official reports and views.
The other part of the letter indicates that after the official report of a committee tasked with investigating the Judiciary Branch in the seventh Majlis issued at that time, Mortazavi made extensive efforts to prosecute the members of the committee.
At least three detainees passed away in Kahrizak at the height of post-election turmoil. Also, a young medical doctor who was serving at the detention center as part of his military service died mysteriously of poisoning there. The place was shut down by the order of Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
