The announcements have caused the bewilderment of customers who can not meet their demands by rationed gasoline.
As the gas stations avoid selling unsubsidized gasoline, the head of Iran's Association of Gas Station Owners declares that the problem is due to the shortage of "special unsubsidized gasoline cards".
Speaking to Khabar Online, Bijan Haj Mohammad Reza stressed: "10,000 liters of unsubsidized gasoline is allocated to each card. When the ration is finished, the cards will be returned to National Iranian Oil Refining and Distribution Company (NIORDC). Then the gas station owner can receive new cards."
"The main problem is the number of these cards provided by NIORDC does not meet the demand of filling stations. For example if a station needs 5 to 6 cards, it will simply receive 2 cards," he said.
Haj Mohammad Reza added: "Currently the shortage of these cards has prolonged the fueling time for cars. We hope the problem is resolved as soon as possible by allocating more unsubsidized gasoline cards to the stations."
Lacking sufficient oil refineries, Iran imports 40 percent of its gasoline for local consumption. The United States has taken measures to impose sanctions on companies exporting gasoline to the Islamic Republic. However, Iranian officials have said on several occasions that new sanctions will not be effective.
