Opposing the appointment of Mohammad Sahrif Malekzadeh as a deputy foreign minister by Iran's Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi, several Iranian lawmakers submitted a petition to Majlis (Parliament) Speaker Ali Larijani yesterday to impeach Salehi.

According to Khabar Online correspondent, the lawmakers believe the new appointment is a threat against the Islamic republic system due to the problematic background of Malekzadeh. Based on the latest reports, so far 25 Mps have signed the impeachment proposal and it's predicted to be signed by more lawmakers.

Appointed by Salehi as deputy foreign minister of administrative and financial affairs, Malekzadeh earlier held a post in Iran's Cultural Heritage, Tourism, and Handicrafts Organization (ICHTHO). He is an aide of the controversial Esfandiar Rahim Mashaei, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's chief of staff. He also held a key position in the High Council of Iranian Affairs Abroad headed by Mashaei.

Principalist lawmakers believe Mashaei, Ahmadinejad's top adviser and his right-hand man is the ringleader of "the deviation current" in the Islamic Republic's administration which has made efforts to undermine the pivotal role of jurisprudents (Foqaha) in the political scene of Iran. In latest weeks some members of this current were arrested for various charges including engagement in sorcery.

The impeachment letter addressed to the Parliament Speaker read: "Regarding the article 220 of the Majlis procedural guidelines, the appointment of Mohammad Sharif Malekzadeh, the former employee of Iran's Cultural Heritage, Tourism, and Handicrafts Organization as deputy foreign minister for administrative and financial affairs, will jeopardize foreign interests of the establishment due to his problematic background in financial issues."

"Although the minister is authorized to appoint his deputy, he has not given the right to appoint a deputy most of whose former colleagues have been arrested and he himself is to be arrested on a number of financial and non-financial charges. Tehran Prosecutor General [Abbas Ja'fari Dolat-Abadi] has already warned the Minister of Foreign Affairs on the issue, but to no avail." the lawmakers noted.

"Regarding the role played by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in supporting the national interests and the tendency as well as efforts made by the foreign espionage organizations for penetrating to Foreign Ministry the issue is absolutely crucial. The important responsibility of the deputy foreign minister for administrative and financial affairs in selecting and appointing the human resources for the embassies of Islamic Republic of Iran in foreign countries adds to the importance of the issue," they added.
