Frattini, who met Clinton in Washington on Saturday, told reporters that Clinton had voiced "her positive opinion on the subject of the eventual participation of Iran" at the G8 talk.
Foreign ministers of the Group of Eight industrialized nations (G8) will hold a meeting in the Italian city of Trieste in June which will focus on restoring stability in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
"Our objective is to have the Iranian and American foreign ministers seated at the same table," the Italian foreign minister reiterated.
Iran and the United States both attended a meeting on Afghanistan that took place in March in The Hague.
Despite a seven-year presence with more than 65,000 US-led forces in Afghanistan, violence has claimed the lives of thousands of Afghan civilians. According to the United Nations, more than 2,000 Afghan civilians were killed throughout 2008 in operations by foreign forces.
The United States and Iran broke diplomatic relations in April 1980, after Iranian students seized the United States' espionage center at its embassy in Tehran. The two countries have had tense relations ever since.
Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini announced that US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is in favor of Iran's attendance at a meeting on Afghanistan in June when G8 foreign ministers gather in Italy.
