Iran's former soccer star and current coach, Ali Daei believes Portuguese Carlos Queiroz won’t rival his Iranian counterparts if he is appointed as the head coach of Iran's national soccer squad.

Breaking his silence over the possible assignment of Queiroz, Daei called him a qualified manager for Iran's national soccer team, in an interview with Khabar Online correspondent he maintained: "If Iran's football Federation signs an agreement with Queiroz, it will take a major step in supporting the Iranian football. Earlier I had said that I don't want to comment on such decision, but now as you insist I would say that Queiroz is a good choice for Iranian football. I don't know based on what logic some complain that he was an assistant of Alex Ferguson in the Manchester United. One who has worked at the top level of football world and head coach of Real Madrid is a excellent option for our football. Accompanied by his assistants, he can make a great development in all levels of the Iranian national team."

Daei's career includes playing at German clubs Bayern Munich, Hertha Berlin and Arminia Bielefeld. He is indisputably the most famous footballer in the history of Iran and still holds the record as the top goal-scorer in international football. He is currently the head coach of Perspolis, one of the two very popular football clubs in Iran as well as Esteghlal of Tehran.

"The background of Queiroz shows that he is a fine coach enjoying a high experience in top rated football teams. We have always chanted slogans on employing great foreign coaches and I believe a prominent manager like Queiroz could be great help to our football," Daei said.

The former soccer star went on to say: "Working in outstanding clubs like Manchester United or Portugal national soccer team is not a minor job and we should be optimistic about his presence in our football. We should not easily lose such prominent managers. We must welcome them and of course I insist, prepare the ground for them to do their job properly. Any manager who is to lead our national team will confront especial challenges. I hope our football officials help Queiroz or any other outstanding coach and minimize these problems, otherwise neither Queiroz nor any other great name would be able to achieve success."

The 57 years old Queiroz is regarded as the discoverer of the Portuguese "Golden Generation" in the early 1990s, which include outstanding international footballers, Luís Figo and Rui Costa.

He won precious awards as a coach in junior levels, and he has been fairly successful at senior and club levels, mainly as Alex Ferguson's assistant manager.

In July 2008 he was named the head coach of the Portugal's national team and led his team to the second round of the 2010 World Cup, losing to eventual champion Spain.

He has not coached since being fired by Portugal last year after disappointing results in qualifiers for the 2012 European Championship.
